Generally ME sufferers experience a combination of muscle fatigue (myalgia), general malaise and cognitive dysfunction (encephalopathy),
hence the name. However, the disease is infuriatingly more complex than this and some of the myriad symptoms are listed below.
The major symptoms of ME are
Overwhelming fatigue after minimal effort
A flu-like malaise
Painful muscles
Neurological problems affecting, for example, concentration
and memory
The range of secondary symptoms experienced, which are not as debilitating but still frustrating and worrying are:
Enlarged lymph glands, most commonly in the neck
Sore throat
Headaches
Muscle twitches
Abnormal temperature control
Sleep problems
Irritable bowel and other gut disturbances
Some ideas as to why people experience these symptoms are outlined on the "Causes" page.
